MEET THe TEAM
Carl founded Base Architects in 2003 after 10 years of working for a mix of UK and international architectural practices. Previous experience yielded project budgets up to £3 billion within Europe and the UK. He was also the chairman for Shropshire Constructing Excellence for 5 years, where he lobbied UK government with regards to Building Regulation legislation and delivered concept offsite construction with regional recognition.
Carl is now the Chairperson of the Company Board. He is also the company’s design mentor, principally on the exemplar NPPF projects and ‘Grand Designs’, he especially enjoys delivering designs that are holistically considered, and simply make sense. These schemes are usually a result of clear thinking and logical responses to the site, location, and the client’s brief.
He supports ‘up and coming’ Architects, Architectural Technicians, and students to improve their design ability and understanding of what an Architectural career entails within the practice and working with Universities and Sixth Form Colleges
Harry joined Base Architects in 2010 after 7 years experience with an internationally recognised architectural practice. Harry has extensive experience in the design and construction of both domestic and commercial schemes through to public sector work exceeding £50m +
Bryn joined Base Architects in 2012 to support the practice’s continued growth and is primarily responsible for project management planning and workflow allocation / monitoring.
He works closely with the design team supplying them with up to date information regarding the status of each project and newly commissioned works.
Prior to joining base Bryn has had a varied background in both the manufacturing sector and local and national economic development organisations, working with UK and foreign investors to start new enterprises, creating new jobs and supporting business investment plans.
Bryn works closely alongside Harry Reece on the development and retention of new and existing clients from Shrewsbury, Chester and Conwy offices.
Ben joined Base Architects in 2013 following 7 years experience with an internationally recognised architectural practice.
Ben has a key role in supporting members of staff within the practice as well as liaising directly with local authorities, clients and contractors to deliver viable schemes both on time and to budget.
During his career he has gained extensive knowledge of design and construction on both domestic and commercial schemes through to an impressive array of educational sector work on projects totalling £50 million plus.
Ben specialises in the application of technology to architecture, building design and construction.
He holds a skill set which enables him to collate, organise and investigate technical information at project concept stage and during design development, delivering innovative solutions to a wide range of schemes.
Kieran joined Base Architects in January 2019 following 3 years experience within a rural practice working closely with external consultants, clients and contractors to deliver a mix of one-off builds, residential and commercial developments throughout Wales and across the border.
Completion of his CIAT Accredited degree in Architectural Technology has allowed him to a attain a broad understanding of the process of BIM (Building Information Modelling) and the software packages required to deliver projects using BIM Protocols.
Kieran has a key role in implementing technology into architecture, whilst providing a practical and methodical approach to the design of projects at the early design/concept stages, planning and through to building regulations sign-off and construction onsite.
Jack joined Base Architects in November 2017 having completed his Part 1 qualification and returned in October 2020 following completion of his Part 2 at Cardiff University. In July 2023 Jack completed his Part 3 qualification at Birmingham City University to become a fully qualified architect.
Having gained his experience at Base Architects Jack has worked on a variety of different scale projects ranging from large masterplan office and residential schemes, to bespoke residential new builds and extensions.
Jack has developed a good understanding of the various processes involved in the successful completion of a project and believes a good understanding of the project brief and an emphasis on client communication is essential in successfully completing any scheme.
Wendy joined Base Architects in 2004 providing support and assistance to Carl Huntley during the early stages of the company’s formation.
Working closely with all members of the practice across the Shrewsbury, Chester and Conwy offices, Wendy enables the smooth day-to-day running of all aspects of the office environment.
Prior to working for base Wendy worked at a variety of architectural practices building a strong knowledge of all stages of the design process.
Business & Planning Executive
Lucy joined Base in 2022 following 6 years in a team leader role at a local architectural and planning practice. Lucy joins with a wealth of experience in client engagement, building and maintaining strong relationships seeing projects through from the initial enquiry to official appointment.
During Lucy’s career she has picked up a broad understanding of the planning system and has experience working within a land use planning setting specifically focusing on gaining consent in areas of constraint such as the Green Belt, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and open countryside. Lucy has a good knowledge of the design process and and will be working closely with the Senior Leadership Team at Base.
James joined Base in January 2018 having previously gained 4 years architectural experience including project management, client co-ordination and architectural design.
He has developed good a understanding of the various processes involved in the successful completion of a project. James believes that an emphasis on client communication and understanding a project brief early on are essential components to ensure a successful scheme,
Jake joined Base in June 2021 having gained a wide variety of sector experience over the previous seven years working within Manchester’s competitive and growing commercial scene and Cheshire’s flourishing private residential market.
Jake has worked on an extensive portfolio of project typologies, from award-winning multi-million-pound developments working with some of the north west’s biggest developers on numerous high rise residential towers, university halls of residence, office space and leisure facilities, to collaborating with private homeowner clients on their high-end residential schemes such as barn conversions and new build homes.
Jake studied at Northumbria University where his creative, conceptual approach to design, with a minimalist and contemporary ethos was developed. This saw his work exhibited in New York City, USA, at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Center for Architecture, after being awarded as an exemplary project in a global competition.
Architectural Designer (Part II)
Dan studied for his Part 1 Architecture qualification at Birmingham City University and graduated in 2019. Following this he worked for a multi-disciplinary architectural practice in London for two years where he primarily worked on external refurbishment projects which included the replacement of combustible materials to multi storey residential buildings as a result of the Grenfell fire tragedy. In 2021 he left London to study for his Part 2 qualification full time at Cardiff University where his masters’ design thesis looked at reactions to urban sprawl in Shrewsbury and the impact of this on the local historical character of the town.
Having grown up on a building site which later became his childhood home, Dan has always had a particular interest in residential architecture at a personal level. He is now looking to continue his studies with a Part 3 qualification to progress towards being a qualified architect. Outside of work Dan is an avid enthusiast of all things motorsports and has been taking part in various off-road motorcycle and car racing events since he was 8 years old. He also enjoys mountain biking and exploring the outdoors.
Architectural Designer (Part II)
Emily studied for her Part I Architecture qualification at Oxford Brookes University, graduating in 2020. Following this, she worked part time at a small architectural practice in Tarvin, Cheshire, working primarily on house extensions and individual house builds. Whilst on her summer break from university she also had the chance to undertake work experience at two other architectural studios in Chester and Manchester and these experiences helped her gain an understanding into the life of a practising architect.
In 2021 Emily started her Part II qualification at Liverpool John Moores University, and joins Base straight from finishing her studies. Her first year involved a residential project which re-thought the traditional ‘Urban Terrace’ design in Toxteth, Liverpool. As a result of this, Emily discovered she had particular interest in community-led projects, particularly ones which involve the regeneration of urban areas.
Emily’s passion for architecture was ignited when her parents bought an old barn when she was 14, and she was able to watch the empty shell develop into their now current home. Art was also always her favourite subject in school, and she enjoys sketching and drawing in her spare time. During Covid-19 she started selling drawings of people’s houses and she has been able to carry on with this hobby as her career has progressed.
Architectural Designer (Part I)
Harry achieved Part I of his Architecture qualification at the University of Wolverhampton, graduating in 2019 with an award-winning major project for a new ‘Maggie’s Centre’. His design orientated around biophilic principles and created a positive space to benefit patients undergoing treatment for cancer and their families.
Since then, Harry has worked with a number of small practices in Birmingham and south Wales working on a variety of projects from smaller householder applications to larger developer schemes. He prides himself on his strong client engagement and has a particular interest in passive design and green infrastructure. Harry intends to hone his knowledge in these areas as he continues to progress through his architectural studies and develops his career at base.
Senior Architectural Technologist
Joe joined Base Architects in 2019 after successfully completing his BSc (Hons) Architectural Design Technology degree where he was awarded the CIAT Outstanding Graduating Student award from his institute.
During his career Joe has gained over 10 years of onsite experience within the construction industry, producing high quality domestic extensions, alterations and new builds. This practical experience has allowed him to gain an in depth understanding of how buildings are produced from concept to completion, working closely with private clients to help them achieve their goals.
Joe gained valuable experience during his studies assisting companies to produce measured surveys, feasibility studies, planning documentation and building regulation packages.
From his practical experience Joe has gained a high level of technological knowledge allowing him to work to technical accuracy, whilst still understanding the importance of good design.
Callum graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in May 2021 and joined Base in May 2023 having previously worked as an Architectural Technologist for a small practice in Cheshire on a range of different projects.
Callum is looking forward to gaining more experience at Base in order to become a full member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technicians. He particularly enjoys working on modern, contemporary builds, but also has a soft spot for barn conversions and equestrian work.
Outside of work he is a committed supporter of Crewe Alexandra FC. He also enjoys a day out at his local racetrack Oulton Park and playing golf.
Ben joined Base in 2023 after nine years in practice with bespoke architectural firms and a countrywide planning and design consultancy.
This has given Ben a wide breadth of knowledge within the architectural design sector; including master planning site layouts for schemes between 10 and 500 units, light industrial, varying levels of care facilities and high-end residential schemes such as farm conversions, residential extensions and complete new build homes.
Ben completed his BSc in Architectural Design Technology in 2012 and has continued his professional development by gaining a strong understanding in BIM to complement his knowledge of design and concept work.
During his time at Base, Ben has enjoyed working on a variety of innovative, exciting projects. Ben enjoys working with clients on a personal level as it gives him a greater understanding of their specific needs and what is required to make their visions a reality.
Jade joined BASE in November 2023, having previously gained 6 years architectural experience at a small rural practice in North Wales. During her career she has worked on a variety of projects and has extensive experience within the social housing and private residential sectors.
Jade has a keen eye for detail and enjoys the creative process of developing concepts, ensuring the clients vision is carried all the way through the project to completion. She strongly believes that a good choice of materials is crucial to the success of any architectural project. This selection not only contributes to the overall aesthetic of a building but impacts its sustainability, durability and quality of space used by its occupants.
Jade studied at the University of Huddersfield before completing her Part 3 examination with RIBA to become a fully qualified architect. Outside the office Jade enjoys travel, art and photography and can often be found in the mountains hiking or skiing.
Practice Marketing Coordinator
Becky joined the Base marketing team in July 2023. Since embarking on her own ‘Grand Design’ build, she took a step into the world of social media and discovered a passion for architecture, interiors and turning visions into reality. If contacting us via our social media platforms, it will be Becky you get a reply from and she will assist you to the best of her ability. You may also meet Becky both during your build and at completion to get photographs and videos of your amazing project.
Sophie has spent the best part of a decade working for various design agencies across the UK, racking up lots of amazing experiences working with many brands from crafting start-up identities to launching new brand strategies for big household names. After setting up her own design business, Hillside Studio, Sophie has been brought on board as our own creative consultant. She keeps a keen eye on our own brand presence, from pitch documents to social media content creation.
