MEET THe TEAM

Carl founded Base Architects in 2003 after 10 years of working for a mix of UK and international architectural practices. Previous experience yielded project budgets up to £3 billion within Europe and the UK. He was also the chairman for Shropshire Constructing Excellence for 5 years, where he lobbied UK government with regards to Building Regulation legislation and delivered concept offsite construction with regional recognition.

Carl is now the Chairperson of the Company Board. He is also the company’s design mentor, principally on the exemplar NPPF projects and ‘Grand Designs’, he especially enjoys delivering designs that are holistically considered, and simply make sense. These schemes are usually a result of clear thinking and logical responses to the site, location, and the client’s brief.

He supports ‘up and coming’ Architects, Architectural Technicians, and students to improve their design ability and understanding of what an Architectural career entails within the practice and working with Universities and Sixth Form Colleges

Bryn joined Base Architects in 2012 to support the practice’s continued growth and is primarily responsible for project management planning and workflow allocation / monitoring.

He works closely with the design team supplying them with up to date information regarding the status of each project and newly commissioned works.

Prior to joining base Bryn has had a varied background in both the manufacturing sector and local and national economic development organisations, working with UK and foreign investors to start new enterprises, creating new jobs and supporting business investment plans.

Bryn works closely alongside Ben Embrey on the development and retention of new and existing clients from Shrewsbury, Chester and Conwy offices.

Ben joined Base Architects in 2013 following 7 years experience with an internationally recognised architectural practice.

Ben has a key role in supporting members of staff within the practice as well as liaising directly with local authorities, clients and contractors to deliver viable schemes both on time and to budget.

During his career he has gained extensive knowledge of design and construction on both domestic and commercial schemes through to an impressive array of educational sector work on projects totalling £50 million plus.

Ben specialises in the application of technology to architecture, building design and construction.

He holds a skill set which enables him to collate, organise and investigate technical information at project concept stage and during design development, delivering innovative solutions to a wide range of schemes.

Jack joined Base Architects in November 2017 having completed his Part 1 qualification and returned in October 2020 following completion of his Part 2 at Cardiff University. In July 2023 Jack completed his Part 3 qualification at Birmingham City University to become a fully qualified architect.

Having gained his experience at Base Architects Jack has worked on a variety of different scale projects ranging from large masterplan office and residential schemes, to bespoke residential new builds and extensions.

Jack has developed a good understanding of the various processes involved in the successful completion of a project and believes a good understanding of the project brief and an emphasis on client communication is essential in successfully completing any scheme.

Jake joined Base in June 2021 having gained a wide variety of sector experience over the previous seven years working within Manchester’s competitive and growing commercial scene and Cheshire’s flourishing private residential market. 

Jake has worked on an extensive portfolio of project typologies, from award-winning multi-million-pound developments working with some of the north west’s biggest developers on numerous high rise residential towers, university halls of residence, office space and leisure facilities, to collaborating with private homeowner clients on their high-end residential schemes such as barn conversions and new build homes.

Jake studied at Northumbria University where his creative, conceptual approach to design, with a minimalist and contemporary ethos was developed. This saw his work exhibited in New York City, USA, at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Center for Architecture, after being awarded as an exemplary project in a global competition. 

Dan studied for his Part 1 Architecture qualification at Birmingham City University and graduated in 2019.  Following this he worked for a multi-disciplinary architectural practice in London for two years where he primarily worked on external refurbishment projects which included the replacement of combustible materials to multi storey residential buildings as a result of the Grenfell fire tragedy. In 2021 he left London to study for his Part 2 qualification full time at Cardiff University where his masters’ design thesis looked at reactions to urban sprawl in Shrewsbury and the impact of this on the local historical character of the town.

Having grown up on a building site which later became his childhood home, Dan has always had a particular interest in residential architecture at a personal level. He is now looking to continue his studies with a Part 3 qualification to progress towards being a qualified architect. Outside of work Dan is an avid enthusiast of all things motorsports and has been taking part in various off-road motorcycle and car racing events since he was 8 years old.  He also enjoys mountain biking and exploring the outdoors.

Harry completed his Part 1 studies at the University of Wolverhampton, undertaking a science-based Bachelor’s degree that provided a strong foundation in the technical and scientific principles of architecture. He then progressed to Birmingham City University (BCU), where he completed his Master’s-level architectural studies before undertaking and completing his Part 3 postgraduate diploma.

Prior to joining BASE, Harry gained experience working within several smaller architectural practices, developing a broad range of design and technical skills across a variety of projects.

Harry joined BASE in 2019 and has since developed experience across the RIBA Plan of Work, from early design and multidisciplinary coordination through Stages 2 and 3, through to technical design, contract administration and on-site delivery during Stages 4 and 5.

Now an Associate, Harry is involved in project leadership, client management and coordination of project teams, helping to guide projects from initial design through to completion on site. He has a particular interest in the technical and practical aspects of architecture, with a focus on ensuring designs are realistic, buildable and properly coordinated. His attention to detail helps him identify potential issues during the design process and work through practical solutions with the wider project team.

Alex brings over 17 years experience working within the architectural sector on a range of residential and commercial projects where he has developed strong technical and practical skills working closely with clients, consultants and contractors to deliver projects from concept through to construction.

Alex has extensive experience in measured surveys, planning submissions and Building Regulations applications, taking a practical and methodical approach to projects.

With a keen interest in technology and problem-solving, Alex plays an important role in delivering efficient and well-considered design solutions, from early feasibility and planning stages through to technical detailing and construction on site.

Bailey joined BASE in August 2026 as an apprentice through Shrewsbury College to spend a year in practice supporting the team on a range of projects.

Josh is currently studying at Birmingham City University as he continues his journey towards qualification as an architect with Base.

Prior to joining the practice, Josh gained experience across a diverse range of project sectors, including adaptive re-use and listed buildings, developing a strong understanding of architectural design across RIBA Stages 1-4.

Josh supports the team in the production of accurate and coordinated drawing packages and has a keen interest in problem solving, with a practical and detail oriented approach to design challenges.

Outside of work, Josh enjoys staying active through sports and the gym, as well as travelling.
