2003

Base Architects Founded

In 2003, Base Architects was founded by Carl Huntley.

We also welcomed our first employee, Wendy Smith, who is still with us 20 years later.
Our first projects were won, and we set off on a journey that would see the practise grow and prosper over the coming 2 decades.

2004-2008

Shrewsbury Office Opens

With the team growing, it was time to move from our original home in Shifnal to our main headquarters in Shrewsbury, where we still live today. During this time, our team grew to 4 members of staff, with future MD Harry Reece being among these early hires.

2009-2012

Base takes part in House in a Day Challenge

Modular homes and offsite construction are fairly common place today, but in 2009 they were foreign concepts. Base were happy to get involved with this project to prove that a house could be built and furnished in just 1 day using these new and innovative techniques. These experiments helped pave the way forward for more affordable housing projects around the UK.
In a period of excellent growth for Base, the team grew to 15 members, with our current Associate Director Bryn Jones joining the team in this time. See if you can spot a young Bryn and a young-ish Carl in the TV spot that was filmed at the site of the House in a Day challenge for the BBC.
In 2012 Base also won the Shropshire Chamber Managing Change award – highlighting again that innovation has long been at the heart of Base’s DNA

First Paragraph 55 Project – Hill Wicket & More BBC Coverage

If you’re on our website, then you may have seen this milestone project on our home page already! Hill Wicket represented a major step towards our goal of being a major player in the planning and application process of grand design buildings.

During this time we also saw our Kennedy Road project shortlisted for a national award, and future Director Ben Embrey joined the team.

One of our projects (Womerton Farm) was also featured popular BBC2 series “The House that £100k Built” highlighting once more that Base’s projects continue to show innovation and individuality at a level that generates national interest.

2018

15 Years of Base

In 2018, we hit our 15 year anniversary and celebrated with the Base Ball. To mark the occassion we became sponsors of the local “Shrewsbury Town in the Community” initiative. Which marked the start of many such community focused activities for Base Architects.

In this year, we also won our first ever HO10 project approval for Bettisfield, this was particularly notable as HO10 projects are a unique planning permission framework to the area, providing unique challenges for our team of consultants.

In 2019 accolades were plenty, but chief among them was the Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Readers’ Choice Award for which a kitchen diner extension at a Grade II listed cottage was shortlisted.
Servicing Conwy and the wider North Wales area, Base Architects Conwy opened it’s doors in 2019 to help take our service offering to a community we were already serving from afar. We also welcomed Joe Salt, who has risen through the ranks to become a Senior Associate.

Base Cares Launched

To promote our work, and encourage others, in 2020, Base Architects created our own campaign -‘Base Cares’ – which consists of a range of policies which strive to become the building blocks to create a better world.

As a leading architectural practice we recognise that we have a responsibility not only to the built environment but also to the welfare of our staff and local communities. We are extremely passionate to ensure that our business benefits those around us, whilst making a positive contribution to society.
This year saw founder Carl Huntley appointed as CEO of Base Architects, with Harry Reece moving into the Managing Director Role.
