In the centre of Shrewsbury lies an intricate network of medieval streets that focus upon the quiet open space of St. Alkmund’s Square.
At the junction of Fish Street and Butcher’s Row once stood a 3 storey building occupied by Central Garages which was demolished by Shrewsbury Town Council in the 1970’s and replaced by a block of public toilets.
What We Did
Due to the toilets being underground, they attracted an unacceptable level of antisocial behaviour.
Base was commissioned by Shrewsbury Town Council to design a new range of public facilities to facilitate this popular tourist location within the Town. The brief contained complex access requirements and significant challenges regarding building in an historic setting.
The result
The scheme which was granted Planning Permission approval in June ’12 is a contemporary building that discretely offers state of the art facilities which are safe and accessible.
The building is also carefully conceived to appear simple and clean in design against the rich range of historical buildings by which it is located.
