This project consisted of a replacement new build structure sat within the heart of Llandudno. The original building formed a commercial property which was beyond viable conversion.
As such our clients, Brenig Construction (Conwy, North Wales) appointed us as lead architects to consider what options could be considered and were feasible on the basis of delivering the scheme as an affordable housing project on behalf of Cartrefi Conwy, North Wales.
What We Did
The project had a number of key constraints that required consideration at a very early stage in order to ensure the scheme was financially viable.
Such constraints consisted of a prominent corner plot within the local conservation area, limited external amenity for storage and safe working, alongside the site being subject to pluvial flooding at the basement level.
The result
By incorporating a contemporary design with traditional principles we were able to provide a striking piece of architecture within a sensitive location.
Through the inclusion of a mansard roof we were also able to provide additional apartments within the roof space which ensured there was sufficient supply of affordable housing within the local area. Cartrefi Conwy’s mission is to ‘create communities to be proud of’ and we certainly felt that this new portfolio piece was an exemplary example of both improving and evolving local communities.
