Innisfree, a beautiful property that required both modernisation and works to rationalise historic remodelling works.
Overview
Innisfree, a Georgian town house sitting within a conservation area and on a sloping site. A beautiful property that required both modernisation and works to rationalise historic remodelling works that had created a complex layout that was not suited to modern living requirements.
The age and quality of the original building, alongside the designated conservation area meant that careful and considered engagement had to be undertaken with the council’s conservation team. This ensured all design considerations were effectively justified when implemented around the building’s character and detailing.
What We Did
Our clients were quite rightly focused on ensuring the proposed works did not jeopardise the character of the original town house.
In order to meet their living requirements, whilst also considering options best-suited to the site constraints, a lower ground floor was included within the initial design concept. This replaced the basement area whilst also facilitating a terrace to the ground floor. Dur to the site’s levels the actual ground floor sat c.3m higher than the rear garden area, and therefore the primary living spaces within the property had little outside connection for family use. Including a lower ground floor extension gave us the facility and option of incorporating a terrace space.
In order to create a contemporary, high-end design to the new extension, whilst also having synergy with the existing historic brick building, we proposed the use of a standing seam copper cladding. The cladding is coated so that it does not age and therefore has a long-term relationship with the main property.
The result
A timeless, elegant piece of architecture.
Innisfree has met the personal living requirements of a lovely family and done justice to a beautiful building.
