Overview
A sensitive renovation and extension of a former schoolhouse, carefully balancing heritage character with contemporary family living.
The design process began with a thorough review of the client’s aspirations, focusing on how the former schoolhouse could be adapted into a cohesive long-term family home. Particular attention was given to reconfiguring the internal layout to better suit modern living while respecting the building’s historic character.
What We Did
Following detailed analysis of the existing structure, its rural Shropshire setting, and its evolution over time, a range of design options were explored.
Through close collaboration with the client, a preferred approach emerged that rationalised the plan, improved spatial connectivity, and introduced new accommodation in a considered and subservient manner.
The extension was conceived as a complementary addition, informed by local vernacular in both form and materiality, while remaining clearly contemporary.
The result
Internally, the scheme enhances natural light, flow, and the relationship between the home and its surroundings, whilst also considering the properties heritage roots.
After a successful design process, the project progressed to detailed design and construction, partnered with a co-ordination role with an Interior Designer, Landscape Designer and Principal Contractor, we were able to apply an holistic design approach to ensure cohesion between all disciplines to ensure the original design intent was realised and the completed home met the client’s long-term needs.
