This scheme was very unique following a master plan review to a private clients dwelling and Base Architects were commissioned to provide a ‘concept to completion’ service from the initial design stage through to administration of the onsite contract works during the construction phase.

This scheme was very unique following a master plan review to a private clients dwelling and Base Architects were commissioned to provide a ‘concept to completion’ service from the initial design stage through to administration of the onsite contract works during the construction phase.
What We Did
It was identified on reviewing the landscaping that an extensive clearing and felling exercise was required in order to protect existing woodland fauna whilst also providing picturesque walks within the grounds.
Rather than store the felled timber externally, or even be taken off site it was decided that a storage shelter would be sensible to air dry the current timber as well as providing additional storage space.
With other works within the grounds such as ‘lake side lodges’, barn conversions and a swimming pool encased in a glass structure we did not want the store to detract from the overall architecture. It was therefore agreed to base the design upon an industrial railway carriage.
The result
A simple steel frame with bowman trussed formed the building and we then cladded the frame in oak boarding and corrugated sheeting.
Additional details such as sliding doors and coach bolt fixings (4,500 in total) ensured that the building achieved the contemporary industrial design.
